Open Source
I have decided to give access to the source codes of all programs that are published on this site. I will publish some of them under the GNU General Public License. By doing so I want to achiev the best possible use for my software.

There is no use to invent the same things several times if it has already been done by someone. For the development of software it is much more intelligent and efficient to use pieces of already existing software if possible and where it makes sense. This way there is more time left to focus on the actual problem and improve the quality of the remaining pieces of software which doesn't exist yet (Of course this also holds for all other fields of engineering).

Open Source strengthens the trust in programs since everybody is given the possibility to find out what exacly a certain program does. By the means of this bugs may be discovered and eliminated sooner. Perhaps the author of a program will even receive propositions for improvements by somebody who has improved parts of the original source code for her own project. Open Source makes it possible for everyone to study the source code of a program. This may lead to a slight increase of competition among the programmers of comparable software which in turn leads to innovation. Therefore Open Source will eventually help to preserve and even improve the quality of software.

Programmers of the Atari scene have written a lot of very good programs which are not worse than any commercial product, and published them as Public Domain or Freeware. This example shows that useful software can also be free or even open source. The Atari scene has proved for several times that not keeping secrets but cooperation and exchange of know-how will lead to progress!
